Obviously it has been awhile since this blog was updated and well no news is good news right! Mia is doing great and in fact her one year heart transplant anniversary is Monday if you can believe it! What an amazing year it has been for this little miss! So much has changed and she has come so far it is really quite remarkable! Her one year transplant date will be another great day to celebrate. Mia recovered pretty quickly from her fevers and has even been with out the feeding tube for days. She is one strong little girl and the celebration of this birthday is proof of that. I thought I'd share this cute little picture collage that Mimi made. Their family wouldn't be the same without all of you.

For all of you Mia followers I thought I'd give a little update. Overall not much changes with Mia. She just gets a little bigger and cuter. Midweek last week she was having fevers and by Friday night they had not improved and she had to once again be admitted to Children's Hospital. Luckily she did not have to stay the night but it's always a little traumatic and scary for her mom and dad when she has to be taken in. I saw her Weds night and could tell she wasn't feeling great as she is usually so happy and smiley and she wasn't really displaying that. It's awful to know she's uncomfortable and yet at the same time amazing to think how far she's come. She still has some battles to overcome (i.e. the feeding tube) but she is a fighter and will win these battles. This first pic is a little sad but it was also so cute I had to include it. Please keep Mia in your prayers.

Little Miss Mia Update

Usually there is not much new with Mia (except how cute she is gettting) which is why I don't post as often anymore. She is learning the typical new things that babies learn. She has rolled over a few times and is now saying the word momma! I got to hold and cuddle her the other night and it was remarkable. It had been awhile since I'd held for more than just a quick hello and as she was curled in my arms I couldn't help but reminisce on how far she has come. There were some very sad times and unknown resolutions as she lay there day in and day out waiting for a heart. My heart hurt watching all that her and her family were going through but I always felt things would work out for Mia and they have and for that I know so many of us will be forever grateful! Mia's health is no where near perfect but has definitely come a long way. Her white blood cell count has declined again and so they will again be tweaking some meds in hopes of solving that. She still needs assistance from the feeding tube but is also continuing to get a little bit better at bottle feeding. Thanks for everyone's thoughts and prayers and feel free to keep em' coming!

Improved and on the News again!

Thanks for everyone's extra prayers for Mia. Her levels have improved and of course she will continue to get monitored for that but hopefully things will only get better. She is getting a little better at learning the bottle feeding too. Hopefully soon she will continue to improve and be able to ditch the feeding tube! Northwest Cable News did an interview with Mia and Mimi and some doctors. It was aired all throughout the day on Friday (sorry I didn't post sooner) but here is the link for anyone that missed it!

More Prayers Please!

I don't want the title of this post to scare anyone. Mia is mostly doing well but she could use some more prayers on her behalf. Her white blood cell count is low which is never a good thing. The Doctors are going to try reducing her immune suppressant drugs to see if that makes a difference, which hopefully it will. Having a low white blood cell count can increase her vulnerability to more infections and they can also even lead to the growth of cancers, neither of which is desirable or good. So please keep sweet little Mia in your prayers. On a happy note...she rolled from her tummy to her side and is now a hefty 14lbs! Plus she continues to charm everyone with her smiles!

Pierce College Choir Club to host fundraising concert for Baby Mia on March 14 at Pierce College Puyallup.

Baby Mia is adjusting to her new heart, but the medical bills keep coming for the Puyallup infant and her family. To help, Pierce College’s Choir Club is hosting a free, benefit concert for Baby Mia at 3 p.m. March 14 at the College Center, Pierce College Puyallup, 1601 39th Ave. SE.

All donations collected at the concert will go to the McDonald family for Baby Mia’s medical expenses.

Mia was born with a congenital heart defect. She had a heart transplant in November and is now recovering at her Puyallup home. The March 14 benefit concert will feature performances by the Pierce College choir and orchestra. The selections will be fun and child- and family-friendly. All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend and to support Baby Mia’s recovery.

New update and new giveaway!

Here is a recent pic of lil' miss sunshine, Mia! I know she has her eyes closed but I still loved the picture so I decided to post it. Plus she kept closing her eyes because my flash was so bright which was kind of funny....and I love the curler in her hair and her heart outfit! Mia continues to do well. There are little hang ups now and then but she is growing and happy. She still struggles on learning to eat and until she has the hang of it the feeding tube will remain. She is off her steroid drug, so one less med is good. Plus the steriod drug suppressed her immune system even more so that's a bonus to be off of that! She continues to bring so much happiness to those around her. So many heart families have never gotten to see their child progress to the point Mia is at and that is truly heartbreaking and our thoughts and prayers go out to them.

So on top of the good news that Mia is continuing to do well the original hostess of the 1st quilt giveaway has come up with another one......

Happier Than Ever

I thought maybe it was time for another update on little Miss Mia! Mia will be 7 months on the 8th and what a remarkable 7 months it will have been. All in all she continues to do well. She still has frequent appointments at Children's Hospital but she is off of a few of her many medications.

She unfortunately still has the feeding tube or "torture tube" as her mom calls it. They are working on her feedings and trying to get her to tolerate formula. She is happy to give smiles freely and frequently and continues to melt the heart of her family and all the doctors and nurses that still see her!

I thought this was an adorable picture as apparently she has recently discovered her thumbs and her knees! Plus diaper only baby pictures are always so cute.
Mia continues to grow and learn thanks to her second chance at life. There are so many people who have supported and prayed for Mia and her family and I just want to again say, "thank you". And to all the wonderful families out there who have so graciously and selflessly given of organs to save another, thank you! Words don't quite do it justice but it truly is an amazing and remarkable gift.

One Day At A Time

Here are some new pics of sweet little Mia. I had the chance to go to one of Mia's weekly appointments on Weds. and let me just say, "wow!" I got a small glimpse of what Mimi's life is like trying to take care of Mia and all her needs and then being home and having 2 other children and a husband and home to care for. That woman is amazing! She has so much on her plate and handles it all so gracefully and makes it seem effortless. I know it's not effortless and some days she is just getting by but she truly is one remarkable mommy,as I'm sure most heart mommies and others with serious medical conditions have to be.

Mia's appointment went pretty well. There were some minor hiccups...i.e. a long time waiting, no lab orders and a low battery for her feeding tube to name a few. We worked through them though and it was wonderful to spend some time with Mimi and Mia again.

Here is a picture of Mia getting her echo. If you'll notice she is looking at the screen, watching her angel heart! It was precious to see!

Mia is still on many meds and I was amazed at how Mimi could just rattle each one with it's dosage off the top of her head. Mia is getting stronger and bigger with each day. If I remember correctly she was just over 12 pounds at her appointment. Life for the McDonald family may not be a piece of cake all the time but I know they are enjoying being together as a family once more!

Unfortunately after Mia's appointment on Friday she had to be readmitted to the hospital. Fortunately it wasn't too major...her sodium levels were lower than they should be so they kept her over the weekend to give her some supplements until the sodium levels improved. I know it was hard for Mimi to back there with Mia but Mimi did say Mia is doing great I believe they got discharged yesterday. All in all she doing well. Hopefully all her levels will soon get balanced so there will be no more hospital stays. Thanks for everyone's continued support and checking up on Mia!

Mia enjoyed a nice Christmas with her family. She is still on many medications but is happy nonetheless. Her mommy, Mimi shared some nice words that I thought I'd post:

The best thing about Christmas was being home, and being home with this little babino. She is such a sweet baby and is the best Christmas present I could have ever asked for. Christmas is a great time to think about what is important to you and reflect on how blessed you have been throughout the year. I doubt there will be another year like this one. We have been through so much together as a family and are strengthened because of it. I don't take life for granted and I hold that little sweetie pie knowing what a miracle it is that she is alive. Also, I think of her donor family and how they are feeling on Christmas day. I hope they can feel of our gratitude to them. We are incredibly blessed, and have seen many miracles. I now know a greater level of Joy because of Mia. I have a better understanding of the atonement and what the savior did for all of us. Christmas will never be the same for me.Thank you to everyone who has done so much for our family this year. We could not have made it on this journey without many of you!! Merry Christmas to you all!!

How can you not smile when you see that adorable face. Mia has come so far and endured so much and is as cute as ever. Her doctor's keep teasing Mimi that Mia is a steroid baby and that is why she is so chubby. That may in part be true but if you have seen Mimi's older children as babies you will remember they were also chubby. Oh I how love the chubbiness on babies! Mia is doing pretty well. They are still trying to tweak some of her meds to get them just right. Apparently she has a horrible diaper rash and has had blood in her stools so they are trying to figure out the cause of that. All in all though Mimi says Mia is happy and doing great

and I know they are enjoying every minute with her!

Update on Baby Mia

I know people are probably wondering about the lack of updates but sometimes there's not much new and I haven't seen her in awhile so I don't have new pics to post. Mia is doing well though. Just adjusting to life at home and the weaning of meds (especially pain meds). She is fussy many times, likely due to the weaning process. Her appointments are going well and her brother and sister are completely enthralled with her. They are enjoying this Christmas season as a family and are grateful for all the blessings they have been given by our Heavenly Father, especially Mia's donor angel! There are still a few days left on the necklace giveaway and others have contacted me about doing giveaways so watch for those! I hope everyone knows how much their help and support is appreciated. The McDonald's are so grateful and awed at everyone's kindness! Merry Christmas!

Mia has been home for a week now. I've heard it's been quite an interesting week. Adjusting to meds and feeds and appointments back at Children's on Mon, Weds and Friday and then a visit to the ER Thurs night. Mia was just constipated (which is what her mommy suspected) but to be safe her doctors wanted her to go in. As soon as they got to the hospital she let it all out, soaking her car seat and of course her clothes. Thankfully that was all it was and she got to go home again! Here's Mia with her grandma (Mimi's mother). She is an amazing woman who has given so much support to Mimi and her family through this difficult time! I love Mia's chubby cheeks in this picture. It looks like her hair (that had been shaved for a previous IV) is starting to grow in also. The McDonald family is enjoying their time at home and have said they can't seem to put Mia down! What a wonderful gift for them to be all together again!

New Family Picture

Here is a new family picture! I love how happy they look! It seems they are starting to settle into somewhat of a routine. Things are still sometimes hairy and chaotic and there are still medicines that will need to be changed and altered as they see how she does but overall Mia is doing well! What a wonderful time of year to reflect on how blessed Mia is and how blessed we all are! There is another baby (one of Mia's former roommates) that has been waiting for a heart who received one a few hours ago. Please pray for her and her family also! Miracles happen when we all come together! Thanks for everyone's continued thoughts, prayers and support that have been given to the McDonald family.

Mia is 5 months old!!!

That's right Mia hit her 5 month mark today. Thankfully she is finally home. I don't think anyone, especially Mia and her mommy could have handled being in the hospital much longer. Mia's family is obviously thrilled she is home. The evening she arrived home her big brother said, "Mom, now we can finally be a happy family!" A happy family they indeed are but there are definitely some learning curves. They've had some long nights administering meds, scheduled feeds and trying to place her feeding tube that fell out the first night. They've had some chaos but happy chaos now that they are all home together!

Mia made it home yesterday evening and is doing great. It will take some adjusting to her feeding and medicine schedule but she is home with her family and loving it I'm sure. For the next little while she will have 3 weekly appointments/tests that will last hours each time but they will now have many more hours of family time in their own home! As you know, Mia's immune system is suppressed so it couldn't hurt to pray that she will not catch any colds or bugs (especially with how prevelant they are this time of year)! Thanks again for everyone's continued support and love of little Mia and her family! Hopefully I'll have a new picture of her at home soon!

Update time: well everyone's favorite little Mia continues to grow and smile. She continues to progress and we are so excited that she gets to go home to her family on Friday!!!!! Can you believe it? One sad note, she failed her suck/swallow test which means she will have to have her feeding tube for about 8 weeks longer, no bottle or nursing! :( All in all though she is doing great! Her mom, Mimi passed her medication quiz which means they are confident she can handle all of baby Mia's meds (sad that there are so many meds she has to be quized, in time hopefully some of the meds will cease to be needed)! Mia is happy though and interactive and I know she'll love being home!Another amazing gal has offered up her talents with a quilt giveaway. Mia Update!!

As you know Mia made it out of ICU and what a different world that is. Mia's mom was hoping she might be lucky enough to go home for Thanksgiving, even if just for a few hours but Mia's transplant cardiologist said today "probably not." Mia's heart rate has been higher than usual and her breathing has been faster and more erratic. They don't know for sure why her vitals are a little off from before but are thinking it will just take some adjusting and tweaking of certain things. Her cardiologist mentioned that maybe her body being off the milirinone is just trying to adjust and her immune suppresant drug level is now really low, previously had been very high so hopefully that will balance out soon too. The doctors have said there will probably be many things (i.e. meds and stuff) changed and adjusted as she grows and they learn how she responds to them. We are thankful for how far she has come and the progress she has made thus far as it truly is remarkable and we pray everything will level out and be just right very soon so she may be home with her family! I had the honor of holding her today and "babysitting" her while her mom, Mimi was able to go view and hold her native heart! Amazing huh! Holding her was heavenly even though I don't think she enjoyed me quite as much as she enjoys her momma holding her! :) I still thought it was wonderful as I had not held her since before she was intubated! All in all Mia is doing pretty well which is nothingless than we expected as we all know what a fighter she is! Not too much longer and she'll be fighting with her brother and sister at home! :)

Yay, Mia made it out of ICU! Soon her time at the hospital will be a distant memory as she is reunited with her family at home! Mia has come along way from the time she was born and I know she has many happy moments and memories awaiting her!

Mia update: She is sadly still in the ICU. A few hours before she was supposed to move to the floor she spiked a fever so she had to stay. Her line is not working properly and they decided to put her back on the milrinone so she had to have an IV inserted in her scalp. Poor baby! Hopefully very soon these days will be behind her! Other than all that though she is doing great!

Her Smile Gets Better and Better!!!

We all know how amazing Mia is and if you hadn't seen her before her transplant she is like a whole different baby! Everyday I am in awe at the progress she is making! She is smiling up a storm, has had all her lines removed so all that remains is her feeding tube! She has gotten to drink from a bottle twice and loved it and gets to wear clothes now, be held all the time and the list goes on!She hasn't been able to be completely weaned from the milrinone which means no moving to the floor today, but once she does she will literally be home in no time at all!
This little baby is gettting so big and has so much strength and fight her in! It will be wonderful to watch the amazing things she does in the coming years!

Is this not about the greatest picture ever! She looks fabulous! I hardly had any words as I could not believe how great she looks. Only a week and half after her heart transplant and she is doing amazing! She still hasn't made it out of ICU but has moved to the pediatric intensive care instead of the cardiac intensive care...baby steps. Hopefully they'll be out of ICU by the weekend and then the long awaited home! The medication level of her immune suppressant drug is very high (toxically high) for some reason, but she is working through it! Her mommy, Mimi said she is happy and awake most of the time and she really wants to eat! What a remarkable baby Mia is and what remarkable fans she has!

Little Update

Mia didn't make it out of ICU today. :( She is still on milrinone, which "is a vaso dilator and helps profuse her arms and legs. When they started the weaning process her hands and feet were cold. They increased her dose, and they are going to try and ween more gradually." Her mom said she is still doing great though and is amazed at how normal her heart looks on the echo. Her other medications are tapering down but until she is able to be off the milirinone she will have to remain in the ICU. Let's pray her body will tolerate and work properly off the mili...so she can be moved to the floor. The closer she is to being on the floor also brings her one step closer to being at home!

Great Strides

Mimi finally got to hold Mia today! Along with that happy news...as long as things continue to go well Mia will be moved out of ICU tomorrow and onto the floor! That is a great accomplishment in itself. Mia's nurses on the floor have more patients to take care of which means Mimi will most likely not be leaving Mia's side so she can help care for her. Please keep her other two children in your prayers though as this means she will probably not be going home to visit until Mia goes with her! That will be a wonderful day but is probably still a few weeks out! We all know little Mia is a fighter and she proves this day after day! She has been and is an inspiration to so many. What a wonderful life she has ahead of her!

Breathing on her own

Well Mia was finally extubated this afternoon after at least a month of continually having a tube down her throat or nose! She is breathing on her own and loving it I'm sure. Previously, it was always sad to see that Mia was crying but not be able to hear her. I haven't heard her yet, but her mommy says it is the sweetest, tiniest little sound! Her mom and dad haven't been able to hold her yet but hopefully that will change tomorrow! Mia is obviously still on a lot of medication. Apparently at one point the nurses were telling Mimi (Mia's mommy) how they call her a rockstar. Mimi thought it was because she was so well loved or strong, but then realized it was because of all the drugs she can tolerate! Everyday she is healing a little more though and before long these last 4 months will be a fading memory as she settles into a routine at home with her loving family! Here is a picture of two of the heroic men that helped Mia get to where she is today. These are the two surgeons that performed Mia's heart transplant! What amazing doctors they must be with such incredible knowledge! We will forever be grateful to them and all the other doctors and nurses like them that save people's lives and give them another chance at life!

New Info...

Just wanted to update everyone on Mia and a couple of fundraiser/giveaways! Mia is continuing to heal nicely! She remains on pain meds but got her 2nd chest tube removed yesterday! Only 1 more chest tube left. Her heart rate and oxygen saturation numbers continue to do well and it looks like they may extubate her tomorrow, which means Mom and Dad can hold her again! Mia is making great strides and I know in time she will be like any other little girl! Mia continues to capture the hearts of all her fans and it seems she gains new fans daily! I know I say this a lot but thanks again to everyone that donates and supports her, as well as her family!

Mia Update!

Well I just returned from the hospital and that is one stinkin' cute baby! It is truly amazing to see the difference in her in only 1 day. Her coloring is better and besides being annoyed at the feeding tube being inserted she really seemed quite comfy and like she really felt better! Her face is a little swollen but she is making great strides! As I mentioned, she now has a feeding tube again and she got one of her chest tubes removed! Just a few more tubes and lines to go!

Mia even opened her eyes for a little awhile tonight! We all know she is a fighter and I truly believe that everyday she will get better and stronger! Way to go little mees!

Thank you all for your support and kindness over these last 4 months. We REALLY appreciate all the donations that have been received and are continuing to be received, as the financial burden a family encounters with a surgery like this continues on for years to come. We hope you feel blessed from the charity you've demonstrated and we hope you'll continue to spread the word about Mia and organ donation! Thanks so much!

Update on Lil' Miss Mia

I've thought for months about what I would say when I got to post about her getting a new heart! So far I don't think any of my posts have been what I pictured them being but I'm just so grateful this day came. I think all of the emotions and lack of sleep have kept my brain a little foggy but nonetheless I'm so happy these following posts will be about her recovery! I'm sure everyone has been anxiously awaiting on update on Mia and I'm sorry to have kept you waiting! Mia is doing great! Her heart rate is good, her oxygen saturation is wonderful, she's got good color and I don't think the doctors, surgeons etc could have asked for a better donor heart! So far everything looks good and these next few days will be telling! Unfortunately Mimi is not feeling well. I'm sure it's a combo of all the emotions, lack of sleep fom the time she got the call etc. Please continue to pray for their family as they still have a long journey of healing ahead of them! I have to say how amazing our medical science is these days. What a wonderful thing these talented doctors can do. And what a wonderful gift this donor family gave Mia! Mia's mom and dad said the doctors seemed giddy after the surgery and how they were so happy with the condition of the heart and that there no complications! I can't help but cry when I think of all Mia and her family have endured and how these next moments will be kind of difficult but hopefully also rewarding as they finally get to watch their baby start to live a pretty normal life!
King 5 news did a little update on Mia last night and I'm working on getting a link for those of you who weren't able to see it! I have to say thanks again for everyone's support and for a loving Heavenly Father that hears and answers prayers. It has truly made a difference in the life of The McDonald Family.

Spaghetti
Mimi said that the tubes all over Mia look like spaghetti and they do. There are a lot of them, but I think our tolerance to the shock of that part has increased. We are just happy to see her doing well. It will be a bit of a roller coaster for the first year, but they say the first week is critical. At this point we are looking forward to a roller coaster of improvements. At least now each step back will be a few steps ahead of any previous setbacks. We are so elated that she can now actually improve! We just learned that the donor heart blood type is B, and Mia's we know is A. This won't pose a problem with a baby, and they confirmed that Mia hasn't built up any antibodies against A type blood pre-op.So she looks good. All the docs and nurses are really kind and excited for us, which makes it nice. We can now see the end of this leg of the journey.

a GREAT Heart
Dr. Cohen said that Mia's hear is great. Not ok, and not good, but she got a great heart. The doctors have all said that it looks like a good stong heart. They had a relatively easy time prepping her as well because there was such little scar tissue from the hypbrid procedure that had been done. We are waiting in her room for her now. She should be another 20 minutes or so. They are sewing up her chest cavity, which isn't typical. Normally the chest is actually left open due to swelling. The space where they took out Mia's over sized heart has lots of extra room since her heart now is substantially smaller. We are so relieved and so excited!

Well not too much news too update you with yet. Just that we are all so grateful and happy (as I know all of you are too). Mia was wheeled into surgery at about 6:15 and it is estimated it will take 5 or more hours! Here are some pictures I took late last night, or I guess it was actually early this morning! She had a little bit of spitting up last night but other than that she was quite cozy and content! Mimi got to hold for hours before she was taken in for her surgery! Mia's Big Day Has Finally Arrived!!

Well it's true. Mia is getting a heart! She is being prepped and will go in for surgery at about 6am! We don't know much yet just that it is finally happening! Everyone's prayers have been answered. I think we are all in shock still and Mia still needs many more prayers as she goes into surgery and recovers from this major procedure! We'll try and keep everyone updated as we receive new information! Thank you for all of your prayers and please remember the donor family who has so graciously given Mia this gift!

Mia's mom wrote something so touching that I'm just going to paste exactly what she said: It's true. She is four months old today. Fun or no fun, the expression "time flies" does not apply here. I feel like Mia was born years ago. Last night I was thinking about how different my life was four months ago. When we were in the hospital waiting for Mia to enter this world, we had no idea how things would play out. I knew it was going to be a rough road, but all of my fears were about post transplant. Can she go to school? Can she play sports? Can she have babies of her own? All of these questions have been put on the back burner. I really was not anticipating the torture of watching her day after day working so hard...clinging to life...waiting for that second chance. Lately I have been soothing her (she does not appreciate the breathing tube) by holding my hand on her chest. It's incredible to feel her heart. Her heart seems so close to the skin, you can actually feel the muscle vibrating. Every time I feel her heart I am reassured by how much it is working. Her heart is working so hard... working every second of every day to keep her here. There are times I wish I could flash back to four months ago, and enjoy the peace. How different my life was, easier...but not better. Mia and her fight have brought me to a place in my life, that now that I know what I know, I can never go back to the person I was before. Life as I knew it is gone, and will stay gone. The heartache is real, the hope is real- both levels of which I have never known until Mia.Sometimes I feel like life needs to stand still, that everyone needs to stop what they're doing and realize the magnitude of what is happening to her. Why is everyone still enjoying life? Don't they know? Mia is stuck right where she is, unknowing of how wonderful life can be. Since her birth so much has happened outside of the hospital. Athletes have won metals at the Olympics. There is a now a new president of the united states. Historical events continue to occur, life continues for everyone...while one tiny baby has no choice but to wait.This girl could not possibly be more of an inspiration to all around her. She has proven that miracles do occur. We love this little girl- and look forward to the day when she be able to come home with her family. I know all of your prayers are keeping her strong. Please continue to pray for her. You made it FOUR months Mia! We Love you so much!

The Goodness of Others

I am truly awed (as are The McDonald's) by the kindness, generosity and overall goodness in people. All the financial and emotional support that has been given to them has been enormous. It has reaffirmed my faith in the goodness of people (especially some that are complete strangers). It is amazing what can happen when people come together.

Since the giveaways started, which was only a couple of days ago, about $2700 has been raised to help with Mia's care! I feel like I can't say it enough but THANKYOU to everyone. I have been overwhelmed (in a good way) with the emails and comments about people wanting to help this sweet little baby! Even people who have never even met her or her family! Mia is so little and fragile yet she has helped and inspired so many to do good and give selflessly! I know if she could realize the extent of what she has done and how many lives she has touched she would simply be amazed! Mia really would melt your heart if you could meet her and she continues to fight every minute of every day! Mia is reaching those little baby milestones that are priceless to a mother (i.e. her smiles). She has finally smiled at Mimi which I know makes all of this seem a little easier! Mia continues to hang tough and still has good days and bad days! She has such a sweet spirit and already in her little life she has done so much good!

Mia continues to have good days and bad days and constantly amazes everyone with her strength and sweetness!

Here are some adorable pics of Mia and her family, as well as some sweet words from her mommy. Three weeks ago we had a family photo shoot. There is a foundation of photographers here in Seattle that come to the hospital and take pictures of the "sickies." Mia is the cutest sick baby- and we have some photo's to prove it. This experience has taught me so much about the good in others. Thank you Soulumination! As much as I don't want to do this anymore, I know I must. Mia is my little baby hero and will be a source of strength for me for the rest of my life. She is still here, and is being patient. I can wait for the day her heart comes, as long as she can wait too. For now, I will enjoy these pictures of her in my arms. Oh how I wish I could hug her... I wish I could hug all of the mommies again that had to leave here without their child.

Here are some updated pictures of Mia. You can see she is nasally intubated which allows her to suck on her binkie which she enjoys. In a nutshell, Mia is doing alright. She has been spiking fevers again and her cultures continue to come back negative. They will continue to culture her to make sure they are not missing anything and/or that she doesn't have a line infection. She was very agitated this morning and was inconsolable. It's so sad to see that she is crying and upset but not be able to hear it due to the intubation tube. Mimi was thinking she had a tummy ache and sure enough as soon as she "passed some gas" she was much better. Her heart rate slowed again and she was able to rest. Mia is lucky to have a mommy who is so in tune with her and her needs. Mia is still not able to be held much if at all right now (due to the intubation) but she gets lots of love from looks and pats. Mia continues to receive morphine and ativan to help keep her comfortable. How nice it will be when just having her mommy's arms around her will be all the comfort she needs.

Mia has been waiting for over 90 days for a heart. It's so hard to watch her pain and suffering. We hope with all our hoping power her wait will not continue for another 90 days. Her parents have talked about listing her on the donor list in other states/regions but unfortunately they would have to have $450,000 upfront to cover the cost of the surgery, which they obviously don't have just laying around. Who does right?!
Mia is fighting to survive with all she has and I know we all sincerely hope and pray that one day very soon she will begin fighting to heal instead of just survive!
We love you Mia!

Update on Miss Mia

I apologize for not posting an update last week after I visited Mia, but here is one after my visit today! Mia had a pretty good day today, altough she did have to go back into surgery a little while ago to get a new central line. Mia was intubated last week to help give her body a rest. Her little body has to work so hard just to sustain itself and she had been suffering from fevers so the doctors decided to give intubation a try and see if that helps make her more comfortable. She seems to have gotten some rest since being intubated and I'm sure it helps that she is receiving pain meds too. Her fevers have gone away and her heart rate has been low so that is a bonus. She is also gaining weight. She is up to almost 10 pounds. Go Mia! When her body doesn't have to work quite so hard it makes it easier for her to put on the pounds instead of burning the all the calories she receives. They were going to be removing Mia's intubation tube today and trying a nasal intubation to see how she does on that. Maybe then she'll be able to enjoy her binkie again. Mia is of course still such a sweet baby who has had to endure so much. It breaks your heart to see her with all her tubes and know that you cannot just instantly make it better for her. She is definitely one tough cookie, just like her mama. The McDonald's have all been so strong through all of this and I cannot wait for the day when Mia gets to be with them at home!

3 Months Old

Mia turned 3 months old. Sadly she is still in ICU waiting, waiting waiting. Not too much has changed, still good days and bad days, but here are some excerpts from her family's blog...... Well the strongest little baby on the planet turned 3 months old. She has been such a trooper the last couple weeks. This last week has been kind of a roller coaster. Mia continues to spike a fever twice every day. The nurses culture her over and over, but nothing ever turns up positive. The last couple days ID (infections disease) has been running all sorts of labs. Mia had her first CT scan, which came back clean. They did discover however that she has blood clots in her right leg. This was caused by the two different caths she had the first weeks of life.
Three days ago they did an ulrasound on her head to determine if she had a stroke. What??? yes, I know! I pretty much felt the tissue in my own heart ripping when they mentioned it. Mia had been so lifeless the two days prior, and she usually has so much fight in her. I was really concerned because her spunk was gone. They gave her some narcan, and she woke up more after that. Apparently her kidneys are having a difficult time with all of the medications that help sedate her. All of her tests for viruses and infections came back negative. They have no idea why she has this continual fever. I guess sometimes babies with severe heart failure just have fevers. So for now, they are just blaming the failing heart. One of the transplant cardiologists is concerned because if they are missing something and they transplant her, it would be very detrimental due to the overloading of immuno-suppressants given post transplant On a lighter note- she now has a cute little squeal she does instead of cry. Because she never feels good (high fevers) she gives us little shout outs to let us know. Before she would strait up scream, now she just has a girly squeal.I have been trying to get her to smile at me. Developmentally she will be behind, but I can't wait for her to look up at me and smile. She will open her mouth up really wide when I play with her, but I don't consider it a smile. She smiles a lot in her sleep (air in the tummy) but nothing due to all of my antics. A big smile is coming soon I can feel it... just like her heart!!I have a renewed hope and faith for my little one.

A Broken Heart

Without the scars and various tubes and wires Mia is attached to she looks like any newborn baby....perfect, sweet and completely kissable. Sadly, Mia is not a typical 3 month old. Her little body is fighting so hard just to sustain itself until she is given the wonderful gift of a new heart. As one holds and cuddles Mia you cannot help but have your own heart break for this sweet little baby who is trying so hard to survive! I look at Mia and her mommy and wish I could make all their troubles better but for whatever reason that is not Heavenly Father's plan right now. It has been evidenced time and again what a fighter Mia is and it is my prayer as well as many of yours that she will keep fighting and grow into a beautiful healthy little girl.

Mia has been spiking fevers off and on for a few days and seems to have tummy aches but is continuing to exhibit her will to live. We hope and pray that Mia's wait for a heart will end shortly and she can begin the path to healing. This little baby really would melt your heart if you could meet her. Please continue to keep Mia and her family in your prayers.

Patiently Waiting

Mia is still waiting for her new heart but seems to be doing pretty well in the meantime. She is gaining weight (she's up to about 8 1/2 lbs now) which is a bonus as that means the doctors are able to keep her body successfully functioning while enduring heart failure and being bigger may open up the door to more heart possibilities. Please pray her body will continue to remain stable and that a donor possibility will present itself very soon!

Thanks to everyone involved in the bake sale. So much work was put into it and it was definitely a success! There were so many creative and delicious looking goods that were donated and so many willing buyers and others who donated money without receiving a treat just to help out! Just a few pictures. It was hard to get all the tables in one shot as there was so much stuff!

I'm grateful and I know the McDonald's are as well that the YMCA allowed the sale to be held there and for everyone that supported it!

Mia had a tough day yesterday. Her central line (which administers her all her meds) seemed to not be working quite like it should so she went into surgery to have a new one put in. They decided to put one directly into her heart through her superior vena cava. That was a lil' upsetting as they hoped to preserve her heart as best they could for the transplant. They also put a temporary line through her groin while they were installing the permenant line in her heart so now she has two good functioning lines. At one point when they thought her central line wasn't working they shaved the top and sides of her head to try and get an IV through her head. That attempt failed and they ended up getting one in her arm but as you can imagine her mommy is not so thrilled about the head shaving. That was the straw on the camel's back. Mia and Mimi are so strong and such fighters but this ordeal is wearing down even the best of them. Mimi and I went to the temple and I hope Mimi was able to feel some comfort and peace and gain some more strength back. They are both amazing and share such a special bond. We pray that Mia's wait for her heart will be over shortly and she will be growing and laughing and playing at home very soon!

She is still tolerating her feeds which is more than the doctors expect from her. For some reason she spikes a fever every day. Her heart rate is continually in the 200's- mostly when she is really mad. She is still on C-Pap, but is tolerating it less so they leave her off. Her kidney function or BUN level was at 53- which if you are like me and don't know much about BUNS- it is really high for an infant. She should be in the single digits. They have her on a continual morphine drip to help with her discomfort. Some times this is not enough and she still has to have bolus doses to help her sleep. Her liver is also very large due to all of the heart medications. She is currently on four heart medications along with a bunch of other meds that help maintain her little body.

In summary- we're not doing so hot. I keep having dreams that she receives her new heart. Some days I feel like I am being tortured (watching her go through all of this), but most days I am just grateful to be here and to be her mom."

Please keep lil' Mia and Mimi in your prayers. I know it's hard for Mimi to be away from the rest of her family, but even from far away she is a wondeful mommy to her other children. We are prayerful that Mia will receive her new heart soon and she can start the road to a healthy recovery and a new chance at life!

Here are some new pictures of Mia. She continues to wait patiently for her new heart. Lil' Mia remains in the ICU in stable condition. In Mimi's words, "The doctors don't really change much from day to day. They just want to keep her stable and keep food going through her intestines." She is on medication to keep her heart pumping and she still receives some breathing assistance but she is hanging in there. Thank you for everyone's continued support and prayers.

Update on Lil' Mia

We figured it was time for an update on our Precious Mia. "On Paper" Mia doesn't look too good. Her heart function hasn't improved since she returned to the hospital. From the time that we took her home, Mia's right side of her heart (the working side) is even more dilated than the deformed non-working left side. From what I gather, they are keeping Mia stable via an orchestra of medications, constantly consulting many professionals and tweaking meds depending on her latest problems and reactions. We have been impressed time and again at the skill and wisdom of the nurses and doctors caring for her. Mia has been on C-Pap (breathing assistance) but gets breaks.

Also, since her heart cannot function well enough to pump the necessary blood to her heart to digest food, they started feeding her today though an ND tube which bypasses the stomach. It is a small amount of food, but nonetheless it will get her digesting food. Apparently it is bad news if the stomach goes for a long period of time without digesting. This seems to be the same story with most of Mia's functions as a brand new body learning to live. I know they keep weening her from the breathing machine so her lungs can learn to breath and grow strong. One thing is certain. Mia is fighting with all that she has. The doctors tell us her ex rays and all info is pointing to bad news, but somehow Mia is getting decent amounts of oxygen to her extremities.

We love her more than we can express. We are grateful for all prayers and words of support. Without God's hand on our shoulders, and without all those around us acting as His angels we would surely have cracked by now.

Mia has had a couple of surgeries to help her while she waits for a heart. She has been so strong and was doing so well that she was released from the hospital and was able to go home to wait for a heart but unfortunately it was only for 5 short days. This is what happened:
"Mia has decided that she prefers Helicopters to Ambulances. Yes that is right, we had to Life Flight Mia on Sunday night. Her heart just isn't strong enough to sustain her body all by itself. She is now stable back in the CICU at Children's Hospital. We did have a wonderful week previous to this though.

Mia went into heart failure. She had a line placed in her chest that will be there until she receives the transplant. They intubated her to lighten the load of the heart by taking the work of the lungs. They are also medicating her to loosen certain parts of the heart and tightening others so that it will flex with less effort, and also the blood can exit the heart with less resistance. Our hope is that she will become stable enough to be able to remove the Breathing tube so she can be fully conscious while waiting for a heart. Our hearts are broken once again by this new chapter in Mia's journey, but we are eternally grateful for the time we got to have at home all together when she is so small and life is so new."

This is how it started:
We received some very alarming news. At a visit to the cardiologist we were informed that our unborn baby girl (Mia) has a severe congenital heart defect. We were devastated. We spent the weekend away with phones shut off and time to cry till there was just no more liquid in our bodies. We are so in love with this little baby and we are prepared to do all that is necessary to help heal her heart. Her heart disease is called Critical Aortic Stenosis. The abnormally tiny opening in her aortic valve has severely affected her mitral valve resulting in a very dilated and dysfunctional left ventricle. We are still in need of much information at this point, but it looks like there is no alternative but for Mia to have a heart transplant upon birth. She will not be able to sustain her own life and will need to be in an ICU until a donor heart becomes available. It still feels like I just stepped off the stage from an Oprah episode, but I think that we have come to grips and are preparing for a miracle. We know that the Lord has prepared a way for this to work out. We are preparing for the best, and look forward to witnessing miracles in the near future. This little one is very active and wants us to know she is here and ready to fight.
